This is a how-to guide and key information on preparing your native beehive for a cyclone or extreme weather event.
If the hive is in a sheltered location and a secure spot the bees will be all ok to ride the cyclone out. If you have any loose-fitting items like roofs or polystyrene covers, make sure these are either strapped down or removed so as not to blow away. Now is also a good time to check any vent or drain holes are open and clear. In the event any water gets inside the hive it has a way to escape.
If you decide to leave the hive outside, we recommend checking on your hives frequently, when safe to do so. Ensuring the hive hasn’t fallen over or been damaged by another object like a fallen tree limb.
What if I want to close the hive up and bring it inside to a safe place?
In this case, follow these steps to ensure the bees are safe and secure inside the hive. Note that it is ok to keep the bees locked inside the hive for around 5 days, But the less amount of time locked in the better.
- Wait until night time and secure the bees inside the hive. Just make sure oxygen can still make its way into the hive. Old mesh, flyscreen or if you have one of the ABeeC hives, we have these travel plugs. Just don’t forget to block off any vent or drain holes as well.
- Bring the hive inside to a cool and quiet spot. Laundry areas can be a good place.
- Once the cyclone has passed return the hive to the original location, this is very important. Remove the ventilation plug and allow the bees to come and go as usual.
