Part of deciding if your Australian Native Bee Hive is ready to split we need to know how strong the colony is doing. Without having to open the hive we can get a rough idea of the strength by the weight. The total weight will give you a good indication of the size / strength of the colony inside. What we are looking for is 3kgs of nest mass inside. If we know the weight of the empty hive we will be able to understand the size of the nest mass.
For example if your empty hive weights 5 kilograms, what we would want to see is a total weight of 8 kilograms before deciding if it is a good time to split to mother hive.
